Calculate Your Body Mass Index (BMI)
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) created a list of guidelines and criteria to determine qualified candidates for bariatric surgery.
Candidates must:
- Have tried and failed other weight loss management regimens.
- Be healthy enough for surgery.
- Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 kg/m2 or higher – approximately 100 pounds overweight.
OR
- Patients may qualify if their BMI is between 35 and 40 AND have a significant obesity-related disease such as hypertension, diabetes, and hypercholesterolemia.
